Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took center stage at the opening of the International CES Jan. 7 to announce that Microsoft would release a beta version of its new Windows 7 operating system this week. In addition, Ballmer announced new partnerships for its Windows Live Essentials product, including a deal with Dell that will allow Microsoft to pre-install Live Search with Dell’s consumer and small business PCs. Earlier in the day, Microsoft also struck a search deal with Verizon Wireless.

Advanced Micro Devices is preparing to roll out a pair of new Phenom desktop processors for gamers and PC enthusiasts at the 2009 CES expo. The new Phenom II X4 processors are the first 45-nanometer chips AMD has offered for desktops. The Phenom II X4 processors are also the first AMD desktop processors to reach a 3GHz clock speed. The two Phenom II processors are part of AMD’s new “Dragon” platform for gaming PCs and high-end consumer desktops. The Dragon platform also includes ATI Radeon graphics and a new family of AMD chip sets.

Market research firm Pike & Fischer predicts the current economic conditions will slow U.S. broadband growth by 12 percent in 2009. Cable companies, the researchers say, will grab most of the growth to be had since despite telcos AT&T and Verizon's fiber rollouts most of their potential customers are still covered only by slower DSL services. President-elect Barack Obama's economic stimulus package, though, could change those predictions.

Salesforce.com's SAAS CRM apps went down Jan. 6 in a nearly 40-minute outage that spurred a tweeting rage on Twitter. Salesforce.com, which hosts CRM and other enterprise apps over the Internet for thousands of companies, says the problem thwarted over 177 million transactions in Europe, Asia and North America. Outages are common among cloud computing service providers, and Salesforce.com is joining Google in that unfortunate arena.

IBM Lotus Notes 8.5 is now available for Mac OS X computers, boasting a user interface that lets users access Notes' full messaging and collaboration features from one screen. The new release also interoperates with Web calendar applications from Google, Yahoo and other public Web calendars, allowing users to display their Lotus Notes work calendar and their personal Internet calendar on the same screen. IBM claims this is its attempt to make Notes more social -- integrating work and play -- as it seeks to compete with Microsoft.

The new SSD can process IOPS (input/output per second) more than 10 times faster than the fastest 15K-rpm SAS disk drive available for transactional data workloads, Samsung said. It features a random read speed of 25K and a random write speed of 6K.
